Hapkido Ground Combatives

The popularity of MMA and the UFC has led to an increase in real-life attackers using techniques they've seen on TV, particularly those aimed at taking opponents to the ground. Since 30% of self-defence situations end up on the ground, having some basic ground skills is integral to your training.

While our core Hapkido classes teach you how to handle untrained attackers on the ground, these techniques may be less effective against someone with a solid ground-fighting foundation.

We now offer specialised ground training to keep pace with evolving combat methods. This training refines your ability to defend against takedowns and deal with situations where you end up on the ground.

To be eligible for our Hapkido Ground Combatives class, you must be enrolled in Hapkido, at least 13 years old, and typically have reached a Blue Belt level in Hapkido.

Supplementing our Hapkido syllabus

While our core Hapkido syllabus includes ground self-defence techniques, most of our training focuses on standing or seated positions. While Hapkido’s self-defence methods are effective against untrained attackers on the ground, students may struggle to apply these techniques against a skilled wrestler or grappler, given their superior familiarity with the ground environment.

Our Hapkido Ground Combatives syllabus is designed to complement the core Hapkido curriculum, providing students with a greater range of options and strategies to use  on an opponent when trapped on the ground. The focus is strictly on self-defence, so if you're looking for a class centred purely on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competition and rolling, this class may not be for you.

The training is supported by Grandmaster Fari Salievski from KMA Martial Arts Liverpool in Sydney, who assists our instructors in delivering this specialised program. Grandmaster Fari (8th Dan Hapkido and 3rd Dan BJJ) was originally taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by renowned Australian martial artist John Will, one of the first non-Brazilian practitioners to earn a BJJ black belt from Professor Rigan Machado in 1997. We use Fari's "FS BJJ" system for Hapkido Ground Combatives because it is focused explicitly on self-defence applications.
